Social media policies in the workplace may include phone bans

It is legally enforceable for employers to implement phone bans during work hours and breaching of such bans may possibly result in certain ramifications. However, do such policies indeed improve workplace safety and boost productivity?

Employers who wish to implement such policies should do so with the understanding that whereas it is within their rights to control the actions of their employees during work hours, any onerous requirements (such as having to lock up phones during the day) might be seen as unreasonable and unenforceable by a court. Whether a policy is deemed to be reasonable or otherwise is usually dictated by the factors which are legitimately required to protect the businesses’ interests.
